Ursula Seckel: Artist and Activist

Ursula Seckel (She/Her) has called the Washington DC area home since 1991. After exploring several successful careers in a variety of fields from Theater to International Travel to Wine & Beer to Wedding Planning, she’s now turned her attention to creating art, cultivating joy, and embracing her authentic bi/pansexual, punk rock self. Ursula creates large scale mixed media works with a message, and has been dumpster diving since childhood, rummaging in recycling bins, and convincing her friends and family to save their “pretty trash” for 2 decades for raw materials. She also creates refined jewelry from recycled materials and traditional beads and metal. She is a full-time weirdo with an ever-expanding garden, living in Springfield, Virginia with her Nesting Partner and two amazing cats who would love nothing more than to knock her art off the table.

Artist Statement

I believe that art can be activism. I’ve long practiced creative reuse, making art from discarded materials and keeping them out of the waste stream. Here, I’ve taken it a step further to call attention to the harm of trash and pollution in our community. I will donate 15% of the sale price of most of my work to local not for profits, to further that effort.

I’m not protective of my process or techniques. I want to inspire others to say, “I could make that!” and then I want you to do exactly that – make art – and keep more trash out of landfills by creating beauty.
