Avocado

Salvaged plywood board, acrylic paint, adhesive, plastic lids, caps, toys, etc.

According to the Capital Area Food Bank, more than a million people in the DC area are food insecure, nearly 1/3 of them are children. This food insecurity means unreliable access to affordable, fresh, healthful food options, like this avocado. Processed and convenience foods are often some area residents' only options, which are associated with a wide variety of negative health outcomes. I have chosen not to paint any of the plastic "tesserae" in this piece to represent how we, as a society, can choose to see each other's strengths and weaknesses, and support one another as unique individuals within a bigger picture. The Capital Area Food Bank helps by sourcing and providing more than 50 million meals every year.
