Waste Stream
Salvaged closet door, acrylic paint, adhesive, plastic lids, caps, toys, paper, etc.
The names of the 130 tributaries of the Potomac River are decoupaged on the sides of this piece. These tributaries, covering 14,670 square miles in four states, are vulnerable habitats, impacted by various forms of waste, and while removing the visible trash certainly helps the environment, there are a lot of pollutants we can’t see: silt and sediment from erosion after land is cleared of trees for building, industrial pollution, pesticides, fertilizers, road salt, etc. The lids, caps, toys and other plastic waste represent all of the pollutants we can’t see. While the water quality of the Potomac River has improved over the years, it’s not yet safe for swimming or fishing. Visit www.potomac.org to learn more about what you can do to help.
